Je suis intéressé par le travail de Mark Rothko. En 2018, à Londres, j’ai vu la pièce Red. Cette pièce de théâtre marquante à deux personnages portait sur les peintures murales marron, rouge foncé et noir de Rothko, et comportait plein d’échanges mémorables et stimulants sur les théories de l’art de Rothko. Dès lors, j’ai résolu d’en savoir plus sur les écrits de Rothko.
L’inspiration d’une série d’œuvres m’est venue des citations de Rothko, notamment celle-ci :
« … L’art est une aventure dans un monde inconnu, qui peut être exploré par ceux qui sont prêts à prendre des risques. »
Cet énoncé m’interpellait et correspondait à mon approche artistique — à la fois dans la gravure et la peinture — comme l’en témoigne mon travail récent et mes pratiques consistant à explorer constamment les processus et le design. Rothko n’a jamais publié de livre de son vivant, mais a écrit des essais et des critiques. I am interested in the work of Mark Rothko. In 2018, in London I saw the play Red. This powerful two man play concerned the painting by Rothko of his maroon, dark red and black murals, and full of memorable and thought provoking exchanges around Rothko’s theories of art. I resolved to learn more about Rothko’s writings.
Inspiration came to me for a series of works from Rothko’s quotes and especially:
‘…. art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can be explored by those willing to take risks.’
It resonated with me and my approach to my art – in both my printmaking and painting – as reflected in my recent work and artistic practice of constantly exploring processes and design. Rothko never published a book in his lifetime, but wrote essays and critical reviews.
