| The representation of animals in art has a long and rich history of symbolism. Through Indigenous tales, classical mythology, biblical stories and many other traditions, animals convey important information about a society’s shared values and world view. Animal Allegories brings together works by 13 members of the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers’ Connective. Made using a variety of techniques, these 19 fine art prints explore the role of animals in historic and contemporary visual culture. Ravens, geese, spiders, butterflies, jaguars, griffins, cats, dogs and other delightful creatures populate these walls, telling stories of transformation, resilience, wisdom, fertility, warm companionship and more. Founded in 2010, the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers’ Connective brings together some 60 local printmakers to participate in exhibitions, print exchanges, and other activities related to fine art printmaking. It presents a cycle of three or four exhibitions a year in the Connective Gallery, as well as other shows in the region. The Connective also runs a small printing studio two doors down from the art gallery. To buy an artwork: Most of the artworks in the exhibition are for sale. Dans les contes autochtones, la mythologie classique, les récits bibliques et bien d’autres traditions, les animaux transmettent des informations importantes sur les valeurs communes et la vision du monde d’une société. Allégories animales rassemble les œuvres de 13 membres du Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau. Réalisées à l’aide de diverses techniques, ces 19 estampes explorent le rôle des animaux dans la culture visuelle historique et contemporaine. Grands corbeaux, bernaches, araignées, papillons, jaguars, griffons, chats, chiens et d’autres charmantes créatures peuplent ces murs, racontant des histoires de transformation, de résilience, de sagesse, de fertilité, de chaleureuse compagnie et bien plus encore. Fondé en 2010, le Collective d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau réunit une soixantaine de graveurs locaux qui participent à des expositions, des échanges d’estampes et d’autres activités liées à l’art de la gravure. Il présente un cycle de trois ou quatre expositions par année ici, à la Galerie du Collectif, ainsi que d’autres expositions dans la région. Le Collectif gère également un petit studio d’impression.
